What's in season

October

Frost has come to our zone 4 garden.  The tomato plants have died and the last of the tomatoes are in the house.  The kale is still doing well, it doesn't mind a little frost.  The pumpkins and squashes have been harvested and stored.  The potatoes and sweet potatoes have been dug.  We have a few kohlrabi that we are eating fresh.  There are tiny little seedlings started in the greenhouse but it will be a while before they are ready to eat.

November

The only thing fresh that is in season right now is the kale in the potager.  We are enjoying the foods that we have preserved by canning or freezing or stashed away for long term storage.  The seedlings are starting to come in the greenhouse and it will be a while before they are big enough to eat but they are bigger every day.

December

We are starting to get greens available in the greenhouse.  We still have potatoes, sweet potatoes and squashes  in the fruit room and canned and frozen produce available.  The potager kale is covered in snow and we have had very cold weather so I fear that it is done for the season.

January

We are eating from the freezer and the canned produce.  We still have potatoes and a few sweet potatoes and squash yet in fruit room.  Our very cold January has slowed  the growth of the greens in the greenhouse.

February

Most of the greens that got off to a slow start are now starting to get a little size on them.  They are enjoying the longer days and the brighter, sunny days.  Moving the tables away from the glazing has helped as well.

April

Dandelions are starting to show up in the lawn

May

This year we had our first opportunity to eat asparagus grown on the farm.  We are only able to eat a bit of it this year but next year should be able to eat more as the plants will be well established.  We are between the seasons of the greens from the winter greenhouse and the greens from the garden.  Next year the hoop house should be allow us to span the two seasons without a gap in supply.

June

We had some peas this year, both snow peas and regular peas.  It is rhubarb season and the basil is big enough to harvest a few leaves.

July

We are getting yellow squash and zucchini now and some cherry tomatoes are starting to redden.  We are also getting raspberries

August

The elderberries are ripening.  The grapes are ready.  Lots of apples on the trees
